Site Criteria

Several items must be considered when choosing the proper Aqua Dams for a specific project.

Depth of water
An accurate measurement is vital.  The water needs to be measured along with the entire path that the dam will be installed.  If it is anticipated that the water level will rise with the installation of the dam then this rise needs to be considered when determining what size of dam to use.

Flowing water
There needs to be provisions made for the flowing water to continue to flow, after the dam is installed, regardless of how small that flow may be.   Underestimating this flow is one of the most common problems.  During the installation of a dam, the increase in the velocity of the flow and the increase in the depth of water needs to be monitored closely to ensure that proper freeboard is maintained on the dam (see chart below).  Because proper freeboard needs to be maintained during installation, dams installed in flowing water tend to deploy in straight line and are difficult to bend.  The greater the flow and the larger the dam the more difficult they are to bend.

Standing water
It is easier to install a dam in standing water.  Since virtually no freeboard is required during installation, any size of dam can be bent into practically any shape.   Remember that when a dam is bent, or curved, considerably more length of dam is used to achieve this bending, so insure that you have adequate length of dam.

Non-Dewatered
If the job site is not going to be dewatered, 6 to 12 inches of freeboard in the dam is all that should be necessary.  A dam can also be over-filled to achieve greater than design heights, if the site is not going to be dewatered.

Dewatered
Under dewatered site conditions, measure the dam accurately at its highest point to insure that it is not overfilled.  If a proper freeboard level is not achievable the dam should be shored up prior to dewatering the site.  This shoring should be placed at the beginning and end of the dam as well as at 10 to 20 foot levels.

Sizes:
Aqua Dams are generally defined by their height when properly filled. Each size Aqua Dam is designed to retain a specific water depth under normal site conditions.

Packing Information:
Aqua Dams up to six feet in height are rolled for easy storage, transportation and deployment. Consultation with the installer/distributor is necessary to determine whether a larger structure should be shipped rolled for easier installation.

Custom Sizes & Materials:
Additional sizes and materials are available on request to meet your special needs (such as site-specific chemical compatibility). Contact your approved Aqua Dam installer/distributor for more details.

SITE PREPARATION

A careful review of the site and proper preparation are essential to the success of your Aqua Dam installation.

Obstructions:
  • Although an Aqua Dam can be installed on extremely rough, uneven terrain, any objects that separate the Aqua Dam from the ground may allow water seepage to occur.  Any large rocks or objects that are located in the intended path of the Aqua Dam should be removed.
  • Although the outer covering of an Aqua Dam is extremely resilient to damage from rocks, it is of extreme importance that any sharp objects such as rebar, tree stumps, steel, etc., that could potentially puncture an Aqua Dam be removed.

**Please Note that the above is intended as general information only.  Because of the unpredictable nature of water,  the use and installation of Aqua Dams are site specific.  If you have any questions not covered here please consult an Aqua Dam Users Manual or contact your Aqua Dam distributor.
